National Complication Rates for Hip and Knee Replacement Patients
This dataset includes national-level data for the hip/knee complication measure, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) measures of serious complications, and 30-day death rates. It has also been enriched with ICD-10 and HCPCS codes with their descriptions.

Description
This hospital compare dataset reports risk-standardized complication measures for elective primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and/or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures. The data set compares hospital performance to the national observed complication rate. The goal of the measures is to improve the quality of care delivered to patients undergoing elective primary THA and/or TKA procedures. It assesses a broad set of healthcare activities that affect patients’ well-being. The outcome of the measures captures eight different complications, each within a specific and clinically meaningful time period, during which the outcome can be attributed to the state where the procedure was performed. The dataset provides information on the quality of care hospitals are providing patients on a national level, and inform providers of opportunities to improve care and strengthen incentives for quality improvement. This data directly compares performance measure information related to hip and knee procedures.

Data Fields
Name | Description | Type | Constraints |
---|---|---|---|
Measure_Name | The name of the Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs). PSIs are the measures of serious complications set by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. | string | - |
Measure_ID | The identification (ID) of the Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs). PSIs are the measures of serious complications set by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. | string | - |
National_Rate | The national observed complication rate for the performance safety indicator. All included hospitalizations with the outcome divided by all included hospitalizations. | number | level : Ratio |
Number_of_Hospitals_Worse | Measure of hospital performance. To categorize hospital performance, CMS estimates each hospital’s RSCR and the corresponding 95% interval estimate. CMS assigns hospitals to a performance category by comparing each hospital’s RSCR interval estimate to the national observed complication rate. Comparative performance for hospitals with 25 or more eligible cases is classified as follows: “Worse than US national rate” if the entire 95% interval estimate surrounding the hospital’s rate is higher than the national observed complication rate. | integer | level : Ratio |
Number_of_Hospitals_Same | “No different than US national rate” if the 95% interval estimate surrounding the hospital’s rate includes the national observed complication rate. | integer | level : Ratio |
Number_of_Hospitals_Better | “Better than US national rate” if the entire 95% interval estimate surrounding the hospital’s rate is lower than the national observed complication rate. | integer | level : Ratio |
Number_of_Hospitals_Too_Few | If a hospital has fewer than 25 eligible cases for a measure, CMS assigns the hospital to a separate category: “The number of cases is too small (fewer than 25) to reliably tell how well the hospital is performing;” If a hospital has fewer than 25 eligible cases, the hospital’s complication rates and interval estimates will not be publicly reported for the measure. | integer | level : Ratio |
Measure_Start_Date | The first day the data measures were collected. Complications were measured within specific times because complications over a longer period may be impacted by factors outside the hospitals’ control like other complicating illnesses, patients’ own behavior, or care provided to patients after discharge. The date format is YYY-MM-DD | date | - |
Measure_End_Date | The last day the data measures were collected. The date format is YYY-MM-DD. | date | - |
ICD10_Code | The International Classification of Diseases ICD-10 code/codes for the specific measure. | string | - |
ICD10_Description | Description used by physicians and other healthcare providers to classify and code all diagnoses, symptoms and procedures recorded in conjunction with hospital care. | string | - |
HCPCS_Code | The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code/codes for the specific measure. | string | - |
HCPCS_Description | Description of the Level II of the HCPCS standardized coding system that is used primarily to identify products, supplies, and services not included in the CPT codes, such as ambulance services and durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) when used outside a physician's office. | string | - |
