Description
This dataset was provided by Alan Garfinkel from the University of California, Los Angeles, Department of Physiology. This dataset came from a study which seeks to determine if a drug called “Dobutamine” can be used effectively in a test to measure a patient’s risk of having a heart attack or cardiac event. Cardiac events predicted in this study are categorized into the following: myocardial infarction (MI), revascularization by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) and cardiac death.
The test is called “Stress Echocardiography” which involves raising the patient’s heart rate by exercise such as having the patient run on a treadmill and then various measurements such as heart rate, blood pressure, and other measurements of the heart are taken after. However, this test is often used in younger patients only but not for older patients who can’t take the stress of hard exercises. In order to assess risk for older patients, stress is placed on the heart before taking the relevant measurements such as giving the drug Dobutamine.
Hence, this study was conducted partly to determine if the stress echocardiography test is still effective in predicting cardiac events when the stress on the heart was produced by Dobutamine instead of exercise. More importantly, this study sought to determine which measurements during the stress echocardiography test were most helpful in predicting cardiac event over the next year.
